The short version
Optic is an iPhone director’s viewfinder and sun-planning app. It does not require an account, run its own cloud service, use advertising or analytics SDKs, or sell personal information. Framing and solar calculations take place on your device.
The main exception to on-device operation is optional weather: opening the Weather panel requests forecasts from Apple Weather using your location. You can use framing without opening Weather.
What stays on your iPhone
- Presets and settings: your camera selection, formats, lens family, focal length, delivery ratios and related preferences are saved in a local file in Optic’s app storage. Optic has no account-based or cross-device sync.
- Camera images: live frames are processed to display the viewfinder. Images are not sent to an Optic server. A photo or clip is saved when you explicitly use the shutter.
- Saved media: photos and completed videos are added to Apple Photos. Temporary recording files are stored locally; a completed clip that fails to save can be retried or discarded.
- Diagnostic messages: app logs record bounded capture stages and error codes rather than images or location coordinates. System diagnostics may also be managed by Apple according to your device settings.
Apple Photos, iCloud Photos and device backups may store or sync data according to your own Apple settings. These are separate from Optic’s local storage behavior.
Camera, audio & permissions
Camera: Optic asks to use the rear camera for live framing and capture. A sample-image mode can be used without a live camera.
Microphone: access is requested when you explicitly start recording a video, not for photos or ordinary framing. Audio is included in the saved clip on a physical iPhone, and the microphone is released when recording ends.
Photos: Optic requests add-only access when you save a photo or video. It cannot browse or read your photo library.
Motion and compass: device orientation and reliable true-north readings align the sun overlay and provide available camera heading for scouting-photo details. Sun sensors stop when the overlay is off or the app is backgrounded.
Location & shared photos
The sun overlay uses location and compass readings while active to calculate and align the selected date’s path. Photo capture also briefly requests available location and heading, even if the sun path is off, to annotate the frame. Optic does not implement continuous background location tracking.
GPS can be visible in the picture itself.
A scouting photo can include GPS coordinates, true-north heading and the actual capture time both in its visible detail strip and in JPEG metadata. Removing location metadata when sharing does not remove coordinates already drawn into the image. Review the photo before sending it.
The strip also records your selected planning camera, sensor format, lens and delivery ratios. This selected cinema kit is not presented as the physical camera that took the image. When location or heading is unavailable or denied, details are marked unavailable; sample imagery does not invent GPS coordinates.
If sun alignment is unavailable, a photo can still save without the sun overlay. Videos contain framing guides and a focal-length label, but no sun projection or GPS detail strip.
Apple Weather
Weather is optional and needs internet access. Opening its panel requests location at approximately kilometre accuracy and passes the available location to Apple’s WeatherKit service for a forecast. Weather does not activate the sun overlay’s motion sensors.
Location and forecast information are cached in memory for the active app session so valid nearby forecasts can be reused. Closing the panel stops its location updates and cancels pending requests. Sample-image weather is explicitly an example and makes no forecast or location request.
Optic also retrieves Apple Weather attribution and legal information. Apple handles its service requests according to its own terms and privacy policy. See Apple’s privacy policy ↗. Forecast attribution and data-source links are available inside Optic.
Your choices & deletion
- Manage Camera, Microphone, Location, Motion and Photos permissions in iPhone Settings. Some controls may appear under Privacy & Security depending on iOS.
- Denying location still permits framing and photo saving, with unavailable location details. Sun alignment and local weather need suitable location access.
- Delete saved formats, focal-length presets or ratios using the app’s supported editing controls.
- Deleting the app removes its local app data from that iPhone; offloading it may preserve that data. Copies in device backups are governed by your backup settings.
- Photos and clips already saved to Apple Photos remain until you delete them there. Copies you have shared or synced must be removed separately.
There is no Optic account or server-side profile to delete. We do not operate a remote archive of your captures or presets.
